Gemile Bay

Four churches. A monastery. A Crusader castle. And, beneath the sea, a sunken city that few people know about.

Gemiler Bay, situated at the far end of Fethiye, does not immediately reveal that it holds such a rich heritage. At first glance, it appears to be nothing more than a quiet beach surrounded by pine and olive trees; however, the picture changes when you look at the island standing right across from it: Gemiler Island.

The story deepens when you delve into the island's origins. In the Middle Ages, it was known as St. Nicholas Island yes, the very same St. Nicholas whom the world today recognizes as Santa Claus. This rocky outcrop, which once served as a refuge for monks fleeing Roman persecution, eventually became home to four churches, cisterns, and a Crusader castle.

The most striking detail, however, lies hidden beneath the water: a massive earthquake in 240 AD submerged the settlement surrounding the island into the sea. Much like Kekova, this is Türkiye's second sunken city yet remarkably few people are aware of it. While swimming in the clear waters, it is not at all surprising to encounter an ancient wall or a fragment of a column beneath your feet.

Accessible by boat from Fethiye or Ölüdeniz in just half an hour, the island welcomes over twenty thousand visitors annually. Yet, every stone you step on seems to hold a secret still waiting to be discovered.
