Birecik Castle is one of the district’s most important historical landmarks, standing on a rocky hill overlooking the Euphrates River and the Birecik Plain. Although its exact construction date is uncertain, the castle was used and restored by different civilizations because of its strategic location. Its position on a white limestone hill also gave rise to its historical name, “White Castle.”
The surviving stone walls and remains reflect Birecik’s long-standing importance as a crossing point along the Euphrates. Combined with its commanding river views, the castle offers visitors an impressive glimpse into the historical identity of the district.
